Humble Beginnings

Without very much on hand, other than a dream to supply quality and affordable bikes to riders, Soichiro Honda opened a tiny shop in Los Angeles in 1959. His number line consisted of several street bikes with fenders that resembled pelican beaks. This dream would soon be met with disappointment when the bikes weren’t received as expected.

 

Dirt Bike Introduced

As perseverance and determination fueled the company’s vision, Honda motorcycles gained popularity, and the company started rolling out new models such as the Hawk and Scrambler. These bikes were immensely popular, and the rest is history. Honda continued to bring out more and better models, leading up to dirt bikes around 1968. This opened a whole new market for motorcycles, and a new type of riding style was born.

The Real First Honda® Dirt Bike

The first Honda dirt bike was a three-speed unit called the “Z50 Mini Trail”. As the name suggests, it was quite small and its handlebars were foldable, which made the bike fit into a car trunk. The Z50 is said to be one of the most successful bikes in American history and is responsible for introducing off-road riding to a new generation of riders. Today, Honda is one of the leading dirt bike manufacturers in the world.
