Follow our guide to learn a few basic ATV riding techniques and avoid common mistakes that many new riders make while learning to handle a quad. Understand Your Machine

Before you plan your first ride, browse your owner’s manual to ensure you understand your ATV and how its controls operate. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the optimal conditions of your machine, including the tire pressure, braking system, and fuel, among others.

Adopt the Correct Riding Posture

Riding your ATV for hours at a time can be strenuous, especially if your riding position is incorrect. To avoid this, you’ll want to maintain a straight-line riding posture, keeping your head and eyes up and looking ahead. You’ll also want to relax your shoulders and bend your elbows slightly away from your body. More importantly, you’ll want to adopt a loose but steady position that will help you shift your bodyweight around bends and turns.

Learn to Start & Stop Proficiently

You’ll want to wear proper gear when riding your ATV and practice a little bit to get familiar with how your model handles. If your quad has an automatic transmission, you will need to put a lever forward to put your machine in gear. After that, you’ll want to press the throttle slowly to get it going.

Ride your ATV in low gear and brush up on your turning, braking, and reversing skills before you head to a trail. Ideally, you should use markers to start, make a turn, and stop your machine while practicing.
